Diving in
the central area of Dominica along the west coast is a very rewarding
experience. Formations are gently sloping shelves which are a
continuation of the land contour.
Though the
area does not have the dramatic walls and drop offs that are in
the south, marine creatures are abundant here AND it's the place
to be to see huge southern stingrays, spotted eagle rays and silver
horn mantas.
Macro photographers
will be mesmerized by frogfish, seahorses, cornet fish, flying
gurnards, pipefish, male jaw fish with their cheeks full of eggs,
sail fin blenny's, pea-sized juvenile trunkfish to healthy and
abundant coral - just to name a few - in as shallow as 30 feet
of water. A patient diver will be richly rewarded with fascinating
scenes everywhere.
Massive leatherbacks,
green, and hawksbill turtles come ashore to lay their eggs on
the sandy beaches and sperm whales can be seen as close as 1/2
mile from shore.
